SRP-500 Frequently Asked Questions

List of Questions
Why use TMP Paper? (Thermomechanical Pulp)

How come the print is so light?

The default setting of the printer is set to print fast. To set the printer to print darker change the DENSITY setting to BOLD (DIP SWITCH BANK 1 – SWITCH 5 Set to ON).

Why is the printer so slow when compared to a thermal printer?

The SRP-500 was not designed to compete with Thermal. The SRP-500 should be positioned to compete with dot matrix printers. A typical dot matrix printer will print at 3.1~4.6 lps while the SRP-500 prints at 6.5 lps.

How can you tell when it's time to change the cartridge?

If the Low Ink Check feature is enabled (DIP SWITCH BANK 1 – SWITCH 8 Set to OFF) the ?cartridge? light will flash at 6.5 million characters. Typical cartridge life is 7 million characters.

What happens when a cartridge runs out of ink?

If the Low Ink Check feature is enabled (DIP SWITCH BANK 1 – SWITCH 8 Set to OFF) after 7 million characters the printer will switch to the other cartridge. If the Low Ink Check feature is disabled the print quality will become extremely poor for the last 20ft of paper before the ink completely runs out.

Why use TMP paper? (Thermomechanical Pulp)

There are three primary reasons:

  1. It is very inexpensive, thus helping TCO.
  2. It is coarse and uncalandered (it has had no special surface treatment). The advantage of being coarse and uncalandered is that the drops of ink will spread a lot when they hit the paper creating large, dark, easy to read print and that the ink will absorb quickly and easily allowing for short dry times.
  3. TMP also has an advantage in that it doesn't have much in the way of chemical processing or additives making it very environmentally friendly. In contrast, thermal papers for instance are made up of several layers of special chemicals which allow the paper to change color when heat is applied to it. The chemical layers cause the paper to be relatively expensive, somewhat toxic (it does not pass California aquatic toxifity standards), and to have poor durability ( since the thermal sensitivity can cause the paper to change color with heat and time eventually making the receipt unreadable).

How is the flash ROM upgraded?

Either at a MS-DOS prompt or using the StoreMaker utility software. SRP500_storemaker.zip Logo Loading Utility. (986 kb)

What is the command to open a cash drawer?

What if the printer is too quiet for a KP application?

By setting the emulation to EPSON-KP (DIP SWITCH BANK 1 – SWITCH 1 & SWITCH 2 set to ON) and connecting the optional beeper CRS Part # 205089 to the cash drawer port a beep will emit each time the printer receives a print job.

Are the parts interchangeable with the SRP-270 or 350?

No parts are interchangeable, this includes the interface boards.

Will the SRP-500 print bar codes?

Not at this time.

Where are instructions to create a bitmap logo and use the StoreMaker utility?

Do you need to have the printer turned on to reset the ink counter?

Yes, the printer will issue a receipt that it has been reset.

How do you clean the ink cartridge?

Hold down the clean button for 3 seconds.

How do you perform a self test?

Power off the printer and hold down the feed button while turning the power back on. The feed button must be held down for at least 3 seconds.

Where can you find the drivers?

SRP_OPOS_v2_0_6E.exe is the OPOS driver (8,249 kb). This is the same driver for the SRP-270\SRP-350. (SRP500_drivers_ver10.exe) is a self extracting file that contains drivers for all Windows platforms and all driver manuals. Please refer to the website (http://www.crs-usa.com/softprnt.asp) for the latest drivers and firmware.

If I need to report a problem, how do I perform a hex dump?

To use the hexadecimal dump function, follow these steps:

  1. After you make sure that the printer is off, open the front cover of the printer.
  2. Hold down the feed button while you turn on the printer.
  3. Close the printer cover.
  4. Run any software program that sends data to the printer. The printer will print all the codes it receives in a two-column format. The first column contains the hexadecimal codes and the second column gives the ASCII characters that correspond to the codes.
  5. When the printing finishes, turn off the printer.

Is there a wall mount option?

No. The printer cannot be tilted more than 15 degrees forward or backward due to the printing method of Ink-Jet.

What is the size of the print buffer?

8 KB.

What is the warranty of the printer?

The warranty is the same as our other printers, one year from the date of our invoice.
